What is Forest Schools?

Forest Schools is a unique way of building independence, self-esteem and a positive attitude towards learning in children and young people as they explore and experience the natural world for themselves.

A combination of freedom and responsibility is beneficial to children with little confidence or challenging behaviour. Valuable life skills are learnt - communication, team working and responsibility.

Forest School is a long-term sustainable way of learning. It celebrates each individual child's talents and is a unique way of building independence, self-esteem and a positive attitude towards learning.

Why is Forest School good for all?

  • Beneficial for children who learn by 'doing'

  • Children involved in Forest School become more responsible for their actions, can calculate risks better and show improved self-confidence.

  • A desire for learning is encouraged and transferred back to the classroom

  • Forest Schools encourage children to become more active and healthy

  • Children develop self-awareness

  • Develop better communication skills

  • Developing independence

And much more!

What we offer

At Watcombe Childrens Centre Nursery we offer a Forest School Holiday Club for children from the age 3 up to 6.

We have two dedicated Forest School Leaders, who between them run the Forest school side of the nursery. They are both fully trained to Level 3.

We provide opportunities for all of the children to play and access a range of resources and activities.

These are planned to cater for their individual interests and learning needs; supported by the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.

We ensure that the children have regular use of the outdoor environment, as well as indoors– to enable them to explore and be active.

Where possible, we try to arrange small outings within the local area, visiting Brunel Woods, Watcombe Beach and the surrounding woods.

Our sessions are open-ended and child led. We endeavour to follow the children’s interests and creative fantastic play ideas.

In addition to this, we provide hands on learning experiences that involve more risky play: such as learning about fire safety before creating small fires and how to use tools safely and effectively.
